STARSPANGLED BANNER

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave!

Happy United States Navy Birthday ! ! !

The Midshipman’s Prayer written by former U.S. Navy Chief of Chaplains William Nathaniel Thomas in 1938:

Almighty Father, whose way is in the sea, and whose paths are in the great waters, whose command is over all and whose love never faileth: Let me be aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will. Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and in deed, and helping me so to live that I can stand unashamed and unafraid before my shipmates, my loved ones, and Thee. Protect those in whose love I live. Give me the will to do the work of a man and to accept my share of responsibilities with a strong heart and a cheerful mind. Make me considerate of those entrusted to my leadership and faithful to the duties my country has intrusted to me. Let my uniform remind me daily of the traditions of the Service of which I am a part. If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith; if I am tempted, make me strong to resist; if I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again. Guide me with the light of truth and keep before me the life of Him by whose example and help I trust to obtain the answer to my prayer, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

A Brief History:
Origination: The Continental Navy was established on October 13, 1775, with merely two ships and a crew of eighty men. The Continental Congress’s decision directed the Continental Navy to transport arms to the British army rather than to defend against it. Nevertheless, these two ships and their crew symbolize the inception of the United States Navy. Throughout the Revolutionary War, the significance of the Navy increased. Presently, the United States operates 40 naval bases nationwide, including the largest Naval Station Norfolk, located in Norfolk, Virginia. Under the sea, submarines became integrated into the Navy during World War II. Although experiments commenced in the late 1800s and during the Civil War, submarines did not constitute a substantial part of the Navy’s inventory until World War II. At that time, submarines became essential for surveillance and rescue operations, despite also being equipped with armaments.

Premise: The U.S. Navy is a vital military service that protects the United States and its interests through military readiness at sea. It maintains freedom of the seas for global commerce, deters aggression, and projects power wherever American interests are at stake. The Navy’s central functions include maintaining freedom of the seas, deterring potential aggressors, conducting combat operations, projecting military power, and collaborating with allies to defend freedom and promote peace. Originating from the Continental Navy established in 1775 during the American Revolution, the Navy maintains the world’s most powerful fleet and serves as a vital instrument of American foreign policy.

Significance: The U.S. Navy is a global maritime superpower that projects military power, protects American interests, and maintains sea security. Its key functions include deterring potential adversaries, ensuring freedom of navigation for global commerce, providing forward military presence, and responding to humanitarian crises. The Navy is a critical component of national defense, capable of both conventional warfare and supporting other military services. Its core functions include power projection and deterrence, sea control, economic security, combat readiness, disaster relief and humanitarian aid, and diplomatic and informational roles. The Continental Navy, established in 1775, was the precursor to the modern U.S. Navy. Its importance grew throughout American history, playing key roles in conflicts like the War of 1812, the American Civil War, and both World Wars.
