To be a well deserved great total eclipse because of its timing in conjunction with a series of Super New Moons, a point where the New Moon will be where it is visibly closer to the Earth. Because of this, the path of the total eclipse area will be not only wider than normal, the time the area of eclipse of the Sun will also be much longer than normal. Additional variances exist, such as the duration of totality (2 minutes 40 seconds in 2017 and 4 minutes 28 seconds in 2024) and the width of the path of totality (approximately 70 miles in 2017 and about 115 miles in 2024). The maximum area of duration is at the point near Torreón, Mexico where the complete duration is 4 minutes and 28 seconds long. This eclipse will be the second visible eclipse within a year (the October 2023 eclipse had no area that was in the total eclipse phase, due to the Sun being too far from Earth, and not covering the whole Sun span). The eclipse starts in the south Pacific Ocean meandering into the north Pacific into This total eclipse will also be the first total eclipse visible in the United States since August 21, 2017. and the partial phase will be visible everywhere in the United States including Hawaii, excluding only the state of Alaska. The fifteen states where totality will be visible somewhere in these states (in order of movement) are:
- Texas
- Oklahoma
- Arkansas
- Missouri
- Tennessee
- Kentucky
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Ohio
- Michigan
- Pennsylvania
- New York
- Vermont
- New Hampshire
- Maine
The two areas of overlap from previous eclipses in the past decade are in Illinois and Texas:
- The convergence of the 2017 and 2024 paths results in the formation of an “Eclipse Crossroads” region spanning approximately 9,000 square miles across certain areas of southeastern Missouri, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky. This particular area will witness a second totality in less than seven years.
- A region in Texas close to San Antonio will witness both the annular eclipse in 2023 and the total eclipse in 2024 as the two paths intersect.
The eclipse also will affect the following six Canadian provinces/territories:
- Ontario
- Québec
- New Brunswick
- Prince Edward Island
- Nova Scotia
- Newfoundland

As this nears, I am getting excited! Im disappointed that I wont be able to see the eclipse where I live in Canada, but I am really looking forward to seeing photos and exactly what I am able to see here!
I am really sad that we won’t be able to view it here in oregon!
It’s only near 25% there. You could punch a small hole in a shoebox and see it on the cardboard unless you have equipment.
