The History:
Origination: Tradition states that soup has been around for probably at least 25,000 years. Soup comes in many different variations–from chicken noodle, creamy tomato, potato and leek, to name a few. The word soup is derived from the Latin word ‘suppa‘, which refers to breads that are soaked in broth. It was popularized in the 1600’s by the French and a new spelling of  ‘soupe‘. The word is also found in the Proto-Germanic language as ‘sup‘, which means “to make liquid”.

Soup Is More Than Savory, It is Healing For the Soul: Soups can offer medicinal properties, with slogans like “Chicken Soup for the Soul” and “The Good Soup Remedies Kids Go For”. As well as any slogans, soup really does assist in soothing and remedial treatment–plus some great home cooking! For instance, chicken soup helps relieve some of the symptoms of common cold and soothes while having a flu. They are very easy for digestion, have herbs and are very savory. Scientifically, a bowl of soup may help in reduction of inflammation in the lungs. It has been believed that chicken soup assists in slowing down the activity of the white blood cells that can cause inflammation during a cold. Plus the savory steam that rolls off the soup can assist in encapsulating mucus that is associated with the healing process of getting rid of the cold, and the less contained in the body, the more oxygen gets to tissue–thus a higher rate of healing. Soup really can heal the soul. Plus–very, very delicious savory soup! Delicious, indeed!

  1. Hmmm. There are a lot of really amazing homemade soups. Mom and my Grandma’s homemade chicken soup was the best! Wish they were still here.

  2. Ah, soup! Nourishing and comforting! My favorites are any Italian or Chinese soups. The Jewish Matzoh Ball soup is good too, except the matzoh balls lay there in your stomach like lead!
