I hope that you have enjoyed both your Halloween and All Saints Day!
HALLOWEEN & ALL SAINTS DAY ! ! !
As legend states, the two world, one of Halloween and one of All Saints Day, are almost complete opposites. The only thing close is Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday. . .
Halloween & All Saints Day ! ! !
A Brief History:
Legend: ALL SAINTS DAY: All Saints Day, also known as All Hallows Day, is known by several names. These include the Feast of All Saints, The Feast of All Hallows, The Solemnity of All Saints, and Hallowmas. All versions celebrate the honor of saints, also known as Christian martyrs, becaseu most gave their lives up for the name of the church. HALLOWEEN: A boundary between the living and the dead become evolved from a holiday honoring saints and spun the web of a holiday with spooky myths and legends. Through it’s evolution came all sorts of costumes, decorating and stories celebrating the Halloween season, from mythical beings: witches, ghosts, zombies, werewolves, bats and way more creepy beings, celebrating the dark side of living in the dead.
Evolution: ALL SAINTS DAY: Pope Boniface IV formally started All Saints Day without its name in its origin. He dedicated the Pantheon Church in Rome in honor of the Virgin Mary and all martyrs in general. Later, Pope Gregory IV continued further evolution of the celebration to more saints. HALLOWEEN: The tradition originated when the Celtic festival of Samhain came about. People lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off spirits and ghosts. Thereafter, All Saints Day originated with the same traditions of Samhain, and the evening before was known as All Hallows Eve. Much later it was renamed Halloween. It would not be surprising if the whole black cat Halloween deal was started out of Pope Gregory IV’s declaration of war on cats.
Holiday Origination: ALL SAINTS DAY: May 13, 609 A.D, and then later in the 7th century. HALLOWEEN: The ninth century.
More Recently: ALL SAINTS DAY: A church service, prayer, and general honor of saints and martyrs. Not as commmon at all as the Halloween holiday in present times. HALLOWEEN: All sorts of celebrations, parties, pumpkins carved out as Jack-O-Lanterns, trick-or-treat with candy after dressing up in a costume going door-to-door in children’s neighborhoods.
The Heart of Fall Activities: ALL SAINTS DAY: The holiday generally has not much to do with a setting of the fall season at all. HALLOWEEN: The holiday is generally one of the most prominent holidays that celebrate a fall theme completely, as Thanksgiving, although definitely fall in theme is so close to the proximity of Black Friday that it connects into the winter season more existantly.
A Few Facts:
I am sharing a few facts, and more, some trivia, some not trivial. . .
- All Saints Day celebrates real people.
- No spirits in the material world have ever been really proven, except a glimmer of one and alcohol.
- It is very hard to believe the mixture of the worlds of All Saints Day and Halloween so close in proximity.
- More. . .
In most recent times there have been the same patterns in and out of the two worlds. Although trick or treat seems like one of the newer traditions, its origins are not distinctly identifiable, but traced to ancient Celtic festivals in medieval times, but the candy industry sure does a great job at milking it without the Milk Duds…
The future looks pretty bright, not bleak! There were talks about making the holiday fall on a same day scenario, but the day to pick would be argumentative. Could you imagine it not being the last day of October?
