Every story begins with a spark of inspiration. For me, it often starts with a “what if?” scenario. What if a spy falls in love with someone who’s unknowingly caught in a web of deceit? Or what if a journalist uncovers a global conspiracy while being rescued by her long-lost love? These questions swirl around in my head, fueling my creativity and driving me to explore the complex dynamics of love under pressure. The storyline forms in my mind like a movie. The moving pieces fall together and sometimes apart, but I always know where they will end up.

Research: A Thrilling Adventure
Now, let’s talk research. Writing romantic suspense demands a deep dive into both the romantic and the thrilling. I often find myself reading up on military tactics, spy gadgets, and psychological warfare while binge-watching action-packed series like Jack Reacher and The Diplomat. I might look a bit suspicious browsing military manuals on Google or checking websites on forensic science, but hey, it’s all in the name of authenticity.

One of my favorite things to research is the international locations such as Afghanistan, Zambia, and Luxembourg. I get into the nooks and crannies of a place such as coffee shops, art galleries, hotels, and the architecture of the houses. The culture comes through in these places.

In addition to the technical stuff, I delve into the emotional landscape of relationships. I use psychological profiles about love and compatibility to understand how characters can connect amid chaos. There’s something fascinating about how love can blossom in the most unexpected of situations—like, say, a stakeout in the middle of a blackout in Australia.

The Writing Habit
As for my writing habits, I’ve learned that consistency is key. I aim to write every day, even if it’s just a few hundred words. Evenings work best for me after working at my day job. A quiet house with a fresh cup of green tea that gets the words flowing. I often look out my back window, thinking about how different scenarios fit together.

And let’s not forget the importance of outlining. I sketch out a rough roadmap of my plot, complete with cliffhangers and romantic tension points. But I also leave room for spontaneity—sometimes characters surprise me, and that’s when the real magic happens.

The Editing Phase
Once the first draft is complete, it’s time for the not-so-glamorous editing phase. This is where I transform a jumble of words into a polished narrative. I often enlist beta readers—people who can handle the suspense and the occasional cringe-worthy romance. Their feedback is invaluable; it helps me see what’s working and what might need a little more spice or suspense. I make sure my draft is as clean as possible before it goes to the editor. Then there are second and third rounds until it’s where it needs to be.
