Sundog on a Very Cold But Snowless Late Afternoon

Here is today’s featured photo presentation of winter weather photos, with today’s presentation of a sundog on a very cold but snowless late afternoon near 167th Street and LaGrange Road in Orland Park, Illinois. Date – January 9, 2023

FACT:  What are sundogs? Sundogs emerge as vibrant patches of light resulting from the refraction of light passing through ice crystals. They are a type of rainbow in essence except made up from ice crystals instead of water drops/droplets. These luminous phenomena can be found around 22 degrees to the left, right, or even on both sides of the sun, contingent upon the presence of ice crystals. Sundogs are most likely to be seen when the Sun is around 22 degrees from the horizon. They usually happen with cold weather, but phenomenon make them possible anywhere in the world.

  1. Brrr!! I’m not too good in cold weather, but I do love a pretty blue sky! Snow is fun, but no one here knows how to drive in it so it always proves a bit dangerous.
