A Brief History:
Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for the “Fifth of May”, and is the yearly celebration commemorating the anniversary of Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire. It all happened at the Battle of Puebla in the year of 1862, in a movement led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. Unfortunately even though the victory, Zaragoza had died some months after the battle from illness.
Signifigance in the United States: The holdiy became more popular in the United States than in Mexico, with the original celebrations in California, where they have been observed annually since 1863. I have lived in Aurora, Illinois since 1994, and several of my friends celebrate riding down Galena Boulevard dispaying a Mexican flag, playing music, honking horns and celbrating in style.
Not Mexican Indenpendence Day : Cinco de Mayo is sometimes confused for Mexico’s Independence Day. It is a very important national holiday in Mexico, which is celebrated the day of September 16th every year.
Celebrated: Since the year 1863, on May 5th every year!
