This morning at 7:33 a.m. CST, we have the start of the only solar eclipse of the year, visible across a narrow path of the South Pacific, Chile, Argentina and the South Atlantic. Maximum eclipse is at 11:13 a.m. CST and lasts until 11:54 a.m. CST. A partial eclipse visible from a wider region in the Pacific, across southern South America and also Antarctica.

The next The total solar eclipse will occur Dec. 4, 2021 but only will be visible to in Antarctica, which is very hard to book a flight to, even far in advance. The next total solar eclipse that will be visible in North America will start in Mexico, go into the United States being visible closest near me in Indianapolis, Indiana, and going all the way to Canada on April 8, 2024. tad-logo-com3.pngSolar eclipses occur when the moon passes in front the sun as viewed from the Earth. When the shadow lines up exactly, the moon covers the entire span of the sun, which causes a total eclipse. Other times, where it only covers a portion of the sun, it is only considered a partial eclipse. Then there are also times when the moon is too far from earth and the sphere size of the moon is smaller than the sphere size of the sun, called an annular eclipse. In this case the event is not able to be viewed with the naked eye, because a section of bright sunlight completely surrounds the dark center. There is not a solar eclipse each month because the moon’s orbit is tilted in comparison to the sun, so it does not align with the sun every month.
