A Brief History:
Origination: Fast food, as defined, is a quick, easy food in which enthusiasts of quick meals celebrate their beloved convenience food. Whether opting for the drive-thru, dining in, or taking it to go, National Fast Food Day invites us to indulge in grilled, fried, and broiled culinary favorites. Similar to contemporary food trucks, Walter Anderson began selling hamburgers from an old streetcar at a busy intersection in Wichita. Despite a limited menu, his hamburgers quickly gained popularity. As demand increased, Anderson collaborated with E.W. Ingram to establish the first White Castle in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas. These innovative restaurateurs launched the first fast-food enterprise, offering hamburgers for just 5 cents each. Following World War I, the rise in popularity and affordability of automobiles led to the introduction of drive-in restaurants.

The Market: Fast food, which gained prominence in the United States during the 1950’s, is defined as any meal that requires minimal preparation time and is served to customers in a packaged format. This type of meal is ideal for quick dining, take-out, or takeaway. A majority of fast-food establishments provide drive-thru services.

More Recently: The United States boasts the largest fast food industry globally, with American fast-food chains operating in over 100 countries. Initially, fast food was primarily comprised of sandwiches and side dishes, but over the years, the offerings have significantly broadened. Presently, fast food encompasses a range of items including fish, various types of fried chicken, tacos, pizza, and an extensive array of side dishes. Soft drinks provide refreshment, while desserts enhance the menu’s appeal. From ice cream and milkshakes to pies and cakes, fast food establishments cater to diverse tastes.

Take Out vs. Drive Thru: The experience largely varies based on the time of day. During peak lunch and dinner periods, the queue of vehicles may extend onto the street, making it more efficient to enter the fast-food establishment to place an order. Conversely, during less busy times, the drive-thru tends to be faster than the dining area in nearly all instances. Furthermore, many restaurants have optimized their drive-thru operations, significantly reducing the time required to fulfill an order and enhancing the volume of customers served through this service.
