A Brief History:
Origination: Cherries have a long history, originating in Asia Minor (now Turkey), where sweet and sour cherries first appeared. They were cultivated by the Greeks and Romans and later spread to Europe and the Americas. Cherries are among the oldest cultivated fruits, with records over 4000 years ago in roots to China. They came to Europe through trade, and the Cerasus region in Turkey was key in their early naming. English colonists brought cherries to North America in the 17th century, and the Lewelling brothers advanced cherry farming in the western U. S. Cherries symbolize purity, fertility, and immortality.

More Recent Origin:  In Japan, cherry blossoms (Sakura) represent spring and national identity, while in the U. S., cherries are tied to folklore and dishes like cherry pie. Today, cherry farming is a major industry in the U. S., particularly in Washington, Oregon, and Michigan. The modern maraschino cherry, dyed and almond-flavored, was developed during Prohibition.

Cherries Are a Healthy Choice: Beyond being a delicious fruit, cherries are rich in nutrients and provide numerous health advantages. They are abundant in antioxidants and possess compounds that aid in diminishing inflammation within the body, including easing symptoms associated with arthritis and muscle discomfort. Cherries serve as a natural source of melatonin, which can enhance sleep quality. Most importantly, consuming cherries can assist in lowering bad cholesterol levels and fostering overall cardiovascular well-being.

More Facts: Michigan grows over 70% of all cherries in the U. S., making it the cherry capital of the world. A cherry tree can produce up to 7,000 cherries, enough for about 28 pies. There are two main types of cherries: sweet and tart, with over 1,000 varieties used in various foods.
