A Brief History:
Origination: The recent Licorice Day celebrated the origin of licorice. People celebrate every day with licorice, and special occasions like anniversaries, birthdays and a great day, to go alongside. The history of licorice and its creation can be traced to B.C. ancient times, from the Ancient Egyptians for cult purposes. In ancient times, Egyptians, Arabs, and Chinese made candies with fruits and nuts that caramelized with honey. Getting it hard so that is doesn’t have to be chewed has also came around in the past few centuries. The historical roots of licorice are found in the early years of man’s appearance.

The Last Few Centuries: Black licorice is a candy made from the root of the licorice plant. The plant is called Glycyrrhiza glabra and is native to southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Its unique flavor comes from a compound called glycyrrhizin, which is extracted from the root. The licorice plant is a perennial legume. Black licorices’ sweet taste and color come from glycyrrhizin found in the licorice root.

Comfort Food: Black licorice is also considered a comfort food, a candy that is very healthy to ingest when spirits are in need of an overhaul. The flavoring and consistency will bring up  the mood of any situation.

Healthy & Medicinal If you enjoy black licorice and have found that it alleviates stomach discomfort, there is a valid explanation for this. Licorice root has the ability to calm a stomach affected by heartburn or gastritis. The glycyrrhizic acid present in licorice possesses immune-enhancing and anti-inflammatory qualities that can aid in restoring equilibrium to the stomach lining. This is certainly a reason to celebrate! Treat yourself to some black jelly beans from the candy jar during this Easter season!
