A Brief History:
Origination: National Napping Day is observed annually on the day after the transition to daylight saving time, highlighting our inherent need for rest. This occasion not only promotes the practice of napping but also emphasizes that there is no stigma associated with it. Although preparing for the time change can help mitigate the disruption to our internal clocks, various aspects of our lives may struggle to adapt, resulting in continued sleep loss. Young children and pets often find it particularly challenging to adjust, and certain work schedules may not allow for an early adaptation to the new time.

Use of Napping: A necessary period of rest can enhance your well-being and elevate your mood. Following an additional amount of sleep, individuals often observe an increase in their productivity and energy levels. Various studies indicate that brief naps lasting 10 to 20 minutes are particularly effective in combating midday fatigue. This type of rest has been associated with notable improvements in alertness, productivity, and overall mood.

Thought of a Day to Assist in Reaching Out to Show the Importance of Sleep: William Anthony, Ph.D., a professor at Boston University, along with his wife, Camille Anthony, established National Napping Day in 1999 to raise awareness about the health advantages of obtaining sufficient quality sleep. “We selected this specific Monday because Americans tend to be more ‘nap-ready’ than normal after losing an hour of sleep due to daylight saving time,” stated Anthony in a press release from Boston University.

Benefits to Taking a Nap: Numerous studies highlight the advantages of brief naps. Among these benefits are:

  • Enhanced alertness
  • Reduced stress
  • Elevated mood

While some individuals may not engage in napping, it is important to keep naps brief. Extended naps or those taken later in the day can adversely affect nighttime sleep patterns. The Mayo Clinic suggests that the ideal duration for a nap is between 10 and 20 minutes.

Celebrated: Happy National Napping Day is celebrated on the first full day after the “Spring Ahead” day, the Monday after the start of DST (daylight savings time), which this year is on March 10th

A Few Facts:
I am sharing a few facts, and more, some trivia, some not trivial. . .

Tips from the Mayo Clinic on Catching Up on that Sleep :
From the article titled “Classic Hacks: Try A Weekend Afternoon Nap To Catch Up On Sleep,” by Bernie Miller of the Sleep Disorders Center at the Mayo Clinic’s Arizona campus advises that “napping for up to 30 minutes between noon and 4 p.m. on Saturday can provide the sensation of catching up on sleep without disrupting your entire circadian rhythm.” (reserving the hours before noon to retrieve the hammock from storage and researching “circadian rhythm.”) The Lifehacker team points out that “there is often a temptation to sleep in on weekends” to recuperate. However, this practice may result in feeling “more fatigued on Monday morning” by interfering with your regular weekday sleep pattern.

Sleep always comes in handy, and is so soothing for the sould, now and into the future!
