Origination: The day emphasizes the importance of error-free writing. Corporate Trainer Judy Beaver established National Proofreading Day to pay tribute to her mother, who had a passion for correcting others. She selected March 8th, coinciding with her mother’s birthday, as the date for this observance.

Use of Proofreading: It is essential to meticulously examine all your correspondence and documents to ensure a favorable and professional impression. Having a set of strategies available can be beneficial in identifying overlooked errors during the proofreading process. Employ a variety of these techniques and alternate them periodically for optimal proofreading results. The day also provides an opportunity for individuals who appreciate proofreading to offer gentle corrections to others. Nevertheless, constructive criticism is generally welcomed when one is invited to review another person’s work.

Manual Proofreading: The use of manual proofreading can be the best scenario to add to any of your works. Here are some suggestions:

Don’t do too much in one sitting: Proofread after an article, important email, or chapter has time to set, and you’re reading it with fresh eyes.
Do not disturb: Remove all distractions, including phones, other deadlines, traffic, noise, and interruptions.
Learn your habits: Keep a list of your routine errors and look for those first.
Turn off autocorrect: Autocorrect can be helpful, but we rely on it too much, leading to errors in texts and emails.
Read it aloud: We catch different errors when we read aloud than when we read by sight alone.
Read your work backwards: A fresh perspective helps us find new errors. Start from to bottom up.

Print your work: Using a different font allows us to see the document differently and spot errors we missed.

Manual proofreading is well worth it, if you have the time. AI proofreading apps provide speed and efficiency in catching errors and suggesting improvements but lack the deep understanding of context that human proofreaders have. Pros include speed, consistency, cost-effectiveness, identifying specific issues, and improving clarity. Cons involve a lack of contextual understanding, over-reliance on rules, inability to replace human judgment, potential for biased suggestions, and limited capabilities for complex prompts.
