A Brief History:
Origination: Did you know that popcorn has been popping around over 5,000 years? Only one variety of corn can pop in the perfect way, the Zea Mays Everta variety. It looks very similar to a typical corn kernel, however in this variety, it is the only one that has the ability to pop once put under heat and pressure.

United States Evolution: Popcorn was sold by the name of nonpareil or pearls in the US. The creator or a device, Charles’ D. Cretor was able to invent a popcorn maker that made kernels pop easily. During the Great Depression, popcorn grew in popularity due to its cheap price which and that it could be afforded by all. It is stated in some articles that the oldest modern popcorn known to date was found in New Mexico, back to 1948–but there are many arguments that it dated into the depression, which was earlier. The small heads of the Zea Mays Everta, and they were discovered by Herbert Dick and Earle Smith in a dry cave known as the “Bat Cave”. Popcorn is an inexpensive common snack in our household, on the and many of us believe that it is one of those modern-day snacks that go well with a movie or show.

Mid to Later 20th Century: The whole popcorn tradition increased during the World War II era, , thanks to sugar rations, which made candy much more expensive and hard to come by. Popcorn became a great staple while going to and at intermission stands at the local theatres and movie cinemas. When television was invented and brought into many American homes, popcorn popularity dropped because it was harder to make in home, and people visited mobile popcorn machines less and less. There were many a new rendition invented in between, like Jiffy-Pop popcorn–that made it very convenient to make. However, when the microwave was invented in the 1970’s, popcorn was introduced to the U.S. almost a decade later, and in 1981 at-home popcorn consumption once again spiked upwards.

More Recently: Today, popcorn is still the very delicious snack that spread the loved throughout history–people eat approximately 17 billion quarts of popcorn every year. More and more renditions have arisen in more recent years. Gourmet popcorn companies like Popcorn for the People strive to invent some new ways to enjoy popcorn. Just like the Aztecs did in their time, people still strive to use popcorn as decorations, especially during Christmas time.

Celebrated: But even though the snack is not just as popular that it is historic too–it has a special day on January 19th every year!. National Popcorn Day in the U.S.!
