The Beginning Years: It is believed the initial European settlement in the Rhode Island, before European colonization, that various Native American tribes inhabited Rhode Island, such as the Narragansett, Wampanoag, Niantic, Pequot, and Nipmuc. The Narragansett were the largest tribe, with the Wampanoag as their adversaries. The Narragansett language disappeared over time but was partially documented in Roger Williams’s work. Giovanni Verrazzano is credited with “discovering” Rhode Island in 1524, naming it after the Greek island of Rhodes.

More History: In 1636, the state of Rhode Island was established when Roger Williams left Massachusetts Bay Colony due to his beliefs. He purchased land from the Narragansett Indians and named the settlement Providence. Quakers formed Portsmouth, Newport, and Warwick. By 1647, these areas merged. Rhode Island’s Blackstone River Valley was America’s initial industrial hub. The Gaspee Incident, a violent protest against the British Sugar Act of 1764, occurred in 1772. The statehood of Rhode Island was proclaimed as freedom from the British colony in 1790.

The average annual temperature is 50°F, ranging from 29°F in January to 71°F in July. Annual precipitation is about 46 inches, evenly distributed. Snowfall averages 25 inches, varying by location. Weather changes often due to low-pressure storms, leading to extreme conditions like tropical storms, ice storms, and heavy snow. The state’s climate is influenced by its mid-latitude location, proximity to the East Coast, and the jet stream. Rhode Island has 201 sunny days per year, and approximately 55% of days are sunny.
