Wish Upon A Streaming Star by Krissi Dallas
Interview:
Tell me about being in a graduating class and navigating love and support for Daisy’s mother.
Many books have been written about characters with cancer; and honestly, I avoid them because it seems like a character always dies. I deal with a lot of heartbreaking real-world situations in ministry and teaching, and I read books for escapism. So, in Wish Upon A Streaming Star, I wanted to shine a light on the day-to-day journey of living your life while someone you love is fighting cancer. This story is not about Daisy’s mom’s cancer. In fact, I intentionally never say what kind she has. Instead, the diagnosis serves as both a great motivator and core fear for my main character, Daisy. I’m pretty upfront that Mama will not die in this series… because that’s not the purpose of her sickness at this point. The real beauty in her journey lies in how her sickness strengthens her faith, wisdom, and ability to see what’s really important in her daughter’s life. It was a joy for me to show how all the other characters in the town rally around Daisy and her mama—especially the Cortéz brothers next door. Like, how do you not fall in love with the boy next door who calls your mother his queen and fixes anything she needs around her campground? I hope my readers will find it sweet to see something as awful as cancer bring about so many heartwarming moments in a story.
How easy is it to balance life and a reality livestream–plus the adrenaline rush of having only 48 hours to unlock the half-million dollars?
In Episode 1, Daisy interrupts—ahem, ruins—a livestream prank that Caz was in the middle of. By Episode 2, they’ve gone viral and everyone on the internet has an opinion. In Episode 3, an anonymous challenge shows up with $500,000 for them to split if they can work together for 48 hours. Which means that, as early as Episode 4, the reader gets to see how the people in this small town come together to help Daisy and Caz complete this challenge. Local friends and family help out at the campground, arrange their summer schedules to work a camera or edit footage, or scramble around to help the two pull off each hilarious movie scene challenge they’re given. While the chemistry and banter between Caz and Daisy create a magical formula onscreen, it’s the people in the background, the residents of the fictional town of Hammock, who empower the two of them to explore their talents—and rediscover their feelings for each other. The action never stops in this one (and neither do the laughter and drama) because of the limited timeframe and forced proximity. Doing it all live on the internet just raises the stakes—and also allowed me to write a third of the book in transcript format, giving readers the sense that they’re watching on screen with all the other Cazmaniacs.
Explain the intentions that Daisy and Caz have for spending the half-million.
A major conflict for Daisy in Wish Upon A Streaming Star is that her family’s riverside campground—which is also her home and her whole life—is in serious debt and on the brink of bankruptcy. The repair list is stacking up and so are Mama’s medical bills, since cancer moved in as an unwelcome guest over the last year. So when the money shows up, it’s an answer to their prayers. Daisy believes she can use her portion to repair the campground, cover her mom’s medical needs, and restore La Hamaca by the River to its former glory.
Caz, on the other hand, doesn’t necessarily need the money; but the content (and fame) that comes along with the challenge is his currency. His sponsor is demanding that Caz increase his subscribers by 50% before the end of summer or he’ll get dropped. Daisy also kind of made a mess of his online reputation when she interrupted his prank on livestream. Now the haters are getting loud, and Daisy could be the one to calm that down if she agrees to work with him.
Both of them have generous hearts that reveal themselves even more as the story goes on.
Tell me about the discovery of feelings during senior year for Daisy and Caz. Explain the style of love these two characters bring to the story.
This story is my nod to a modern-day version of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I wanted to try and capture the slow burn of attraction between two people who are being governed by past hurts and society’s expectations. Yes, they’re completing a challenge for money, but the real challenge is learning all over again how to communicate with one another and seek forgiveness. Senior year is over; Daisy and Caz spent it in bitter separation. They can’t get that time back, but they can find a more authentic love for each other if they can just swallow their stubborn pride. Wish Upon A Streaming Star is an enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, slow-burn, forced-proximity romantic comedy that will hopefully leave you tempted to try some of the scene challenges for yourself (lake lift from Dirty Dancing? cook-off competition? makeover?). Synopsis:
He’s an internet star.
She can’t stand him.
Together they just went viral.Daisy McEntire might seem like an uptight control freak, but it’s only because she’s trying to graduate high school, support her cancer-fighting mother, and save her family’s riverside campground. The last thing she needs is her obnoxious neighbor, internet star Caz Cortéz, keeping everyone up with his late night video stunts and ridiculous pranks. Forget that they grew up as best friends—that was before he relentlessly obsessed over his hair and stats.
But when Daisy accidentally botches one of Caz’s pranks on livestream, the video goes viral, endangering his sponsorships and throwing her into an unwelcome spotlight. As if the overnight attention isn’t enough, half a million dollars in an unbreakable lockbox mysteriously appears. The key to unlock it? Reenact a series of cliché Hollywood movie scenes together within 48 hours.
The catch? It all has to be done live on the Internet—no rehearsals.
Daisy needs the money. Caz needs the stats. Surely they can work together long enough to complete the challenge, split their earnings, and then get back to ignoring each other from across the property line.
The one challenge they can’t control, though, is the one that could jeopardize it all—falling in love.
