The first English settlement, a fur-trading post, was established on Kent Island in 1631. Maryland became a colony under King Charles I, with George Calvert granted land north of Virginia. Calvert’s son, Cecilus, settled the colony named “Terra Maria” or “Maryland” after Queen Henrietta Maria. The colony was mainly Roman Catholic and promoted religious tolerance through the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649.
