The Beginning Years: It is believed that the initial Massachusetts was first home to tribes that spoke Algonquian languages, including the Wampanoag, Narragansetts, Nipmucs, Pocomtucs, Mahicans, and Massachusetts. These tribes mainly relied on hunting and fishing for their food. The Pilgrims were the first settlers in Massachusetts, founding Plymouth Colony in 1620 and forming friendly ties with the Wampanoag people. This was the second permanent English colony in America after Jamestown. The Pilgrims left England for Holland to escape religious persecution for not following the official church. Although they had religious freedom in Holland, they worried that their children would lose their English identity. They contacted the Virginia Company to settle in America as a separate group. In the fall of 1620, they traveled to America on the Mayflower, landing near Provincetown at Cape Cod. Since this area was outside their charter, the Pilgrims created the Mayflower Compact, an early document of self-governance, before disembarking. The first year was very tough due to limited supplies and harsh weather, but Wampanoag leader Massasoit and his people helped them. In 1621, the Pilgrims held their first Thanksgiving to thank God for a good harvest and survival. This Thanksgiving symbolized the peace between the Wampanoags and the Pilgrims, even though only about half of the Mayflower passengers survived the first year. The colony grew slowly over the next decade, reaching around 300 residents by 1630. Springfield, Massachusetts was founded in 1636 by settlers led by William Pynchon. The area faced tensions with Connecticut, leading to the establishment of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1640. King Philip’s War destroyed New England’s economy. In 1645, the General Court ordered rural towns to increase sheep production, and in 1652, Boston silversmith John Hull was authorized to produce local coinage. Charles II restored the throne in 1660 and regulated trade for England’s benefit. Massachusetts and Rhode Island ignored English demands until 1682, and King Charles vacated the charter in 1684. In 1660, King Charles II proposed the amalgamation of all New England colonies into a single administrative unit. James II succeeded him in 1685, and the Massachusetts Bay Colony was annulled in 1684.

The nearby jet stream also plays a role, leading to variable weather patterns in the state.The average temperature during the summer months is from 70°F to 90°F degrees, in fall months from 50°F to 70°F, and winters are usually at or below freezing (typically lower inland, especially in mountainous regions). The days in Massachusetts that are sunny average between 200 to 213 days per year, or approximately 50 to 60% in lower areas and 45 to 50% in mountainous regions.
