A Brief History:
Origination: Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver, sketched the initial bar code on the thesis of Morse code technology long before technology advanced enough to realize his innovative idea in the year 1952, with the first barcode being scanned on June 26th, 1974 in a Marsh store in Troy, Ohio. In 1974, the first item with a Universal Product Code (UPC) was scanned at Troy’s Marsh Supermarket, marking a significant moment in history. Clyde Dawson, head of research and development for Marsh Supermarket, was the first “shopper” to have his item scanned, which was a multi-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit chewing gum. This event solidified Troy’s place in American history. Every few years, the town of Troy in Miami County, Ohio celebrates a special event that highlights its role in the grocery trade industry.

Modern Usage: Barcodes gained commercial success when they were utilized to automate supermarket checkout systems, a task that they have now become almost universally used for. In 1973, the barcode design developed by George Laurer was chosen by the Uniform Grocery Product Code Council. Laurer’s barcode, featuring vertical bars, had better print quality compared to the circular barcode developed by Woodland and Silver. The use of barcodes has expanded to encompass various other tasks referred to as automatic identification and data capture (AIDC). The first successful implementation of barcodes was seen in the UK supermarket group Sainsbury’s in 1972, using shelf-mounted barcodes developed by Plessey. In June 1974, Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio utilized a scanner manufactured by Photographic Sciences Corporation to scan the Universal Product Code (UPC) barcode on a pack of Wrigley’s chewing gum. QR codes, a specific type of 2D barcode, have recently gained significant popularity due to the rise in smartphone ownership. While other systems have made progress in the AIDC market, the simplicity, universality, and cost-effectiveness of barcodes have limited the role of these alternative systems, especially prior to the availability of technologies like radio-frequency identification (RFID) after 1995. Later on, the UPC was converting the library system to complement the Dewey Decimal Systems and Library of Congress (LC) filing systems it with ISSN codes to filing of batches of books, magazines and publications in libraries worldwide.
