A Brief History:
Origination: On April 10,1872, a journalist and newspaper editor named J.Sterling Morton founded Arbor Day in Nebraska, aiming for it to become a nationwide tradition. The initial event urged Nebraskans to plant numerous trees, as they longed for the greenery of the eastern forests. In response, over 1 million trees were planted in the first year alone. Trees serve a crucial role beyond just marking the changing seasons. They play a vital role in safeguarding the Earth’s topsoil from erosion, producing oxygen, and offering habitats for various wildlife species. Additionally, trees are a replenishable resource that offers a wide range of materials for construction, energy, and office necessities. By planting trees in our surroundings, we enhance our outdoor living areas and elevate our general well-being.

2 Different Types of Trees: There are two main different type of trees:

  1. Deciduous trees
  2. Coniferous trees

Deciduous Trees: Deciduous trees are characterized by their broad leaves that undergo color changes throughout the seasons.

They are also considered “hardwoods” in the woodshop, even though there are some hardwoods that are indeed softer than some softwoods. The largest difference and indicator of a deciduous trees is the fact that they reproduce via a seed. Some popular types of deciduous trees are:

  • Catalpa
  • Elm
  • Ginkgo
  • Betula nigra
  • Birch
  • Eastern redbud
  • Cottonwood
  • Beech
  • Japanese Maple
  • Maple
  • Oak
  • Red maple
  • Aesculus glabra
  • Quaking Aspen
  • Hackberry
  • Hickory
  • Saucer Magnolia

Coniferous Trees: Coniferous trees usually do not possess leaves but instead have needles and maintain their green color (sometimes even greener in winter months depending on the tree type) throughout the entire year. Not all conifers are evergreen. A small group of conifers grow and lose their leaves each year,
