“Please elaborate on why in Shattered Dreams you chose to write a love story about an innocent woman who spent time in prison.”

I wrote this novel after I had taken a deep dive into the Adnan Syed case. I first got hooked on the story after listening to the podcast Serial, then went on the listen to Undisclosed which is much more detailed. 

If you aren’t familiar with the case, Adnan was convicted of murdering his girlfriend. He was seventeen when the murder happened. The actual evidence against him is thin. Whether he’s innocent or guilty, it got my writer brain to what-if-ing. How would a conviction at such a young age affect a person? What if that person was innocent? How would that person be when they got out? How would they be different from who they were going in? 

In my mind, there’s a horror to being charged, being convicted, and being in prison when you are innocent. The thought of that seriously frightens me. 

But Shattered Dreams isn’t about Helena being imprisoned, it’s about the aftermath of her imprisonment. How it has changed her. Physically and mentally. How the girl who went to prison isn’t the woman who came out. And how nothing of the life she had before is left. Everything has changed. 

It’s only after she meets Thomas that she can begin to find her true self again. It’s his love, his understanding, his complete acceptance that allows her to have the courage to face everything she’s been through and not let it defeat her.
