The day honors every U.S. President First Lady in the history of the country.
A Brief History:
Origination: National First Ladies Day a day that is celebrated in order to honor all of the first ladies of the United States. The day commemorates the founding of the the country’s first first lady, Martha Washington with President George Washington’s inauguration on April 30, 1789. Martha, who was born on June 2, 1731 paved the way for every president to have a FLOTUS.
All the FLOTUS: Every president had a FLOTUS. The exception appeared to be President James Buchanan in the year 1857, but even he acquired Harriet Lane, the president’s niece. She stepped in as the role of the first lady. Several other presidents held office as widowers requiring someone to step into the role as a first lady.
Roles of the First Lady: Many first ladies assist with important roles, such as campaigning, appointed officials, and many different capacities as well as being teachers, doctors, Girl Scouts, and more.
Remarked Era After the Lincoln-Douglas Debates Including Becoming President: Eight first ladies became widows while they were living inside the White House– first being Anna Harrison. only four were the wives of presidents who were assassinated–Mary Lincoln, Lucretia Garfield, Ida McKinley, and Jacqueline Kennedy.
Celebrated: The National First Ladies Day Commission declared National First Ladies Day to be observed on the last Saturday in April in order to commemorate the creation of the First Lady in 1789. Another First Ladies Day is celebrated on June 2, because it will be Martha Dandridge Washington’s celebrated birthday, being born on June 2, 1731.
