These are the Dog Days of Summer! Summer is going into it’s final whole month, as the “Dog Star” Sirius is making it’s rise in the sky in the morning sky! August is guaranteed to be all as hot as the other months of summer, despite the waning sunshine, and slightly shorter daylight. Happy Dog Days to everyone. . .

Dog Days:
Location: The World
Start Dates:
July 29 – August 1, 2022

Started: Dog Days began everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere.
Circa:
They do not end on any specific day but start July 3rd in the certain areas where the star Sirius can be seen first.
Length: 30 to 61 days in length until Sirius is obviously visible everywhere in the world.
Recorded in 1883 by Dunwoody:

Dog days bright and clear
Indicate a good year;
But when accompanied by rain,
We hope for better times in vain.

Facts about Sirius, the “Dog Star”:

Statistics:
Magnitude: Sirius is the brightest proper star in the Earth’s night sky.
Worldwide To-be Locations:
It is 8.7 light-years away from Earth.

Effect on Weather: It has no effect whatsoever on the planet’s weather or temperature.
Dates Visible: Rises mid to late July and is visible throughout winter months all the way until early to mid April when it gets too close to the Sun to be seen.

Future:
Meandering Earth Axis: The star continues to return to the night sky in late summer, its position continues to gradually shift relative to the Sun and will rise in the middle of winter in about 10,000 years. The Earth has a wobble that takes 10’s of thousands of years to complete. The “North Star” or Polaris (α Ursae Minoris) is currently the north Pole’s star. The wobble will make the star Vega (α Lyrae), a much brighter star. Vega currently is the brightest star to be directly overhead, or the zenith, as visible in Chicago, Illinois. Vega was the”North Star” in 12,000 BC and will be so again around the year 13,727. The whole wobble path takes about 25,000 years to fully complete.

A.K.C. Sanctioned Events:
The A.K.C. sanctions events in which dogs and handlers compete divided into these three areas:

  • Conformation shows
  • Junior Showmanship
  • Companion events: all registered and PAL/ILP dogs can compete. These include:
    • Obedience trials
    • Tracking trials
    • Dog agility, including the specialized Fifteen and Send Time events
    • Rally obedience
  • Performance events, which are limited to certain entrants; PAL/ILP dogs of the correct breed are usually eligible:
    • Coonhound events (coonhounds; no PAL/ILP dogs)
    • Field trials (hounds)
    • Earthdog trials (small terriers and Dachshunds)
    • Sheepdog trials (herding tests) (herding breeds, Rottweilers, and Samoyeds)
    • Hunt tests (most dogs in the Sporting Groups and Standard Poodles)
    • Lure coursing (sighthounds only)

Conformation Shows: For the conduct of conformation shows, the A.K.C. organizes dog breeds into sporting, hound, working, herding, terrier, toy non-sporting, and miscellaneous groups.
Conformation Classes: In all sanctioned conformation showing, the dogs are divided into two catagories: Dogs (male) and Bitches (female). Any dog can win in a Best of Breed, Group or Show. Dogs (male) win more because the testosterone naturally shows the required characteristics of the breeds requirement much easier than that of the females. In order to be considered in any dog show, it is absolutely required that both a male and female not be “fixed” meaning being spayed or neutered. One of the first things a judge checks for and is mandatory in all cases is to see if the dog is able to bear or can be studded. Fixed dogs can in most cases be entered at obedience trials and other events, but not in the show for championship.
Championship: The championship is not achieved by winning Best of Breed, Group or Show. It is achieved through winning the purple “Winners Dog” ribbon. Every dog, male or female is required to attain 15 points with two major wins (a major win is worth three points or higher) in order to become a champion. It is knind of confusing, so the environment for the actual rules are found here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/cdn-origin-etr.akc.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/02150210/Counting-Points-2019.pdf
Conformation Awards:

  • Winners
  • Best of Winners (BOW)
  • Best ofBreed/Variety(BOB/BOW)
  • Best of Opposite Sex(BOS)
  • Select Dog and Select Bitch (SEL)
  • Grand Championship Points (GCH)
  • Awards of Merit (AOM)
  • Best in Group, each group of dogs in the show
  • Best in Show, the ultimate award in any show is to be determined the best dog in the whole show

Terminology:

  • All Rounder Judge: An individual licensed by the AKC to judge every breed.
  • Breed Type: The manifestation of those unique traits and characteristics of a dog that distinguish it as that particular breed.
  • Breeder: The owner of the dam (mother) when she was bred to produce this dog.
  • Breeder-Judge: Someone licensed by the AKC to judge dogs of their breed.
  • Breeder-Owner-Handler: An individual who bred, owns and handles that dog.
  • Benched Show: A show where dogs are required to be on assigned benches while not being shown. This allows all concerned – spectators, breeders, handlers and owners – the opportunity to interact, ask questions, and share information about the various breeds.
  • Catalog: The compilation by breed of all dogs entered in the show, listing armband numbers, birthdates, sire and dam, breeders and owners.
  • Champion (CH): A title or the dog that has earned a certain number of points (15) in competition at AKC licensed dog shows.
  • Conformation: The structure and physical characteristics of a dog.
  • Gait: The action of movement of the dog. Generally speaking, a sound and balanced gait usually indicates proper conformation and structure.
  • Judge: An individual licensed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) to judge dogs.
  • Limited Entry: Where the entry is governed by certain parameters set by the club, such as total number of dogs or champions only; or in Junior Showmanship, a certain number of qualifying wins for the handler.
  • Owner-Handler: Someone who handles a dog that they also own.
  • Professional Handler: Someone who handles a dog for a fee.
  • Stack: The pose itself by a dog or the posing of the dog by a handler in its natural stance.
  • Standard: The written description of the traits and movement of the ideal specimen of a breed, generally based on form and function. Each parent club creates and maintains their breed standard. Judges are to judge dogs by comparing them to the standard for their breed.
  • Variety: A division of a breed based on coat, color, or size. For example, Poodles (size: Standard, Miniature, Toy), Cocker Spaniels (color: Black, Parti-Color, ASCOB); Collies (coat: Rough, Smooth).

General Obedience Awards:

  • Companion Dog (CD)
  • Companion Dog Excellent (CDX)
  • Utility Dog (UD)

AKC National Championship: The AKC National Championship is an annual event held in Orlando, Florida, which is by invitation only, dogs being invited to the show having either finished their championship from the bred-by-exhibitor class or ranked within the top 25 of their breed. It is typical for the show to be seen on major television stations.

Canine Good Citizen Awards:

  • The Canine Good Citizen Program tests dogs of any breed (including mixed breed) or type, registered or not, for basic behavior and temperament suitable for appearing in public and living at home.
  • The AKC Reunite, formerly AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR), founded in 1995, which is North America’s largest not-for-profit pet ID and recovery service.
  • The AKC Humane Fund supports breed rescue activities, assists shelters that permit domestic violence victims to bring their pets and educates dog lovers about responsible dog ownership.
  • The AKC also provides titles for therapy dogs, after the dogs have been certified by AKC recognized therapy dog organizations and have performed a required number of visits.

Professional Handlers: Also, handlers are commonly recognized, although the A.K.C. does not directly authorize recognition. It is done by careful handling, mostly to the day by great word-of-mouth.
Ribbons and Awards: Dogs winning at shows win all sorts of colored ribbons, rosettes and trophies for the different winnings at a show or trial. A lot of such awards come from companies like Hodges Badge Company.

Non-sanctioned Events: There are non-sanctioned shows held, which go on without A.K.C. recognition, for both pure-bred dogs and non-pure-bred dogs.

Local Kennel Clubs:
Major Examples: The Westminster Kennel Club Show in New York is the largest worldwide show and is sponsored by the Westminster Kennel Club. The Chicago Kennel Club is the largest show in my area in Illinois. There are hundreds of clubs ranging in size to really small shows. The drawback is that it is harder to attain championship in smaller venues.
Worldwide Kennel Clubs:
Anywhere in the World: Dog shows, obedience trails and all of the favor don’t just happen here in the U.S. There are many major shows such as the Crufts International Dog Show held annually in the United Kingdom.
The FCI (International Canine Federation): Fédération cynologique internationale (FCI) (English: International Canine Federation) is an international federation of a number of national kennel clubs.

Breeding:
Pedigrees: A pedigree is a family tree for your dog. It follows through depending on how many generations are featured on the pedigree. It shows the success of the breeding program that was followed through before your dog is obtained. There are different styles of techniques involved with successful breeding.
Line Breeding:
Examples would be mating between first or second cousins, uncle to niece, aunt to nephew, and in some references half brother to half sister is also listed as an example of line-breeding. There are different techniques of line-breeding used where the position of the match are purposely lined up by position, in order to obtain best breeding results.

Inbreeding: Inbreeding is frowned on at all costs. It is the practice of breeding dogs with pedigrees where either the parents or the grandparents are directly the same. It can create a breed’s deterioration, and has done damage to various breeds that can take decades to mull over the defects caused by this really bad technique of breeding. Such behavior of breeding had caused a really bad effect to the Old English Sheepdog and Great Pyrenees. The effect can range from overt viciousness and the effect of inbreeding always seems to exemplify the bad things about any breed, especially when it is a newer breed.
Stud Dogs and Stud Service:
This is the practice of hiring a stud to breed with a bitch that is in heat. Pictures and pedigrees are often offered for the breeds finest to the smallest of kennels in the offer of their male dogs to be of service. Fees are exchanged and offers are made. Sometimes it is monetary or often it can be a pick of the litter. There obviously are different and even no guarnatees offered in exchange for such services.

Training:
Different Training for Different Purposes: There are various training for any and all dogs available. These can range for anything up to and including just making your pup listen to you, security. . .all the way to a service dog for the blind.
Different Popular Types of Training:

  • Behavioral training. Behavioral training is any type of training that teaches dogs to behave well around both people and other animals.
  • Obedience training.
  • Agility training.
  • Vocational training.
  • Service Dog Training

Service Dog Training: Any dog that is geared up to be of service to the blind persons MUST be certified by their state’s secretary of state’s offices. If they are not certified, the technically are a pet. Even the biggest champions in the world are not invited to go into stores and restaurants. A service animal cannot be discriminated against by a store owner, and must be welcomed to accompany their blind owner. If a crime happens against a service animal, it often can not only aggravate the crime, but often change the degree and the total crime, up to and including murder. The dog is licensed with the state it is in and if the blind person should happen to die as a result, I have seen the murder sentence issued.
To the Moon and more:
Animals including dogs and other species have been instituted worldwide with space flight. A lot of training and care is a must for such travel.

Largest to Smallest and OtherTrivia:
Largest A.K.C. recoginized Breed: The Irish Wolfhound
Smallest A.K.C. recoginized Breed: The Chihuahua
Colors:
Color range is anything. Curly, straight, long, short hair. . .no hair, you name it! Most popular is brown.
Other Trivia: I could make over a book in trivia about dogs. They are so, so cute!!!

Just For Fun:
I recommend that you have some fun with your dog RIGHT NOW, if not tonight. They deserve your attention and the are so lovable. Love your dog!
