Today’s Featured Flower Photo of the Day: Hyacinth

Here is today’s featured photo flower presentation. To let this year shine bright, I am featuring fine photos of flowers, continuing to honor the brighter side of life again this year. Today’s Flower of the day is the Hyacinth.

The Hyacinth, or the Hyacinthus in the Asparagaceae (Scilloideae) family is a small, fragrant, bulbous flowering plant and a spring-blooming perennial. Bulbs are planted in fall and because the Hyacinth is a perennial, they come back every year with proper care. The Hyacinth blooms a period of 8 to 12 weeks and grows to the size from a few inches to over three feet tall. The Hyacinth present showy lavender flowers with rounded and leathery leaves, all attached to spongy, sometimes inflated stalks. The Hyacinth makes for great middle of display edging (not direct edge) for your spring displays before summer planting season. Make sure to plant Hyacinths bulbs strategically so your summer annuals do not dislodge the bulbs. For the largest flowers and straightest stems, plant your Hyacinths in full sun. The bulbs will also flower in light shade or half-day sun. In warmer climates, the bulbs need to be pre-chilled before planting.

  1. I love hyacinths! The photos are beautiful. If I’m not mistaken, those look like Blue Delft and grape hyacinths.
