A Brief History:
Origination: Today serves as the United States Air Force’ birthday, marking its official establishment date of September 18, 1947, following the enactment of the National Security Act of 1947, which designated it as a distinct branch of the military, evolving from the previous Army Air Services and Forces. Its origins trace back to the Aeronautical Division of the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1907, which was responsible for operating the initial heavier-than-air flying machines. This division eventually developed into the Army Air Corps and subsequently the Army Air Forces (USAAF) before achieving independence.

Premise: The United States Air Force’s fundamental principle of the Air Force is to “fly, fight, and win—airpower anytime, anywhere”. This branch of the military ensures global vigilance, global reach, and global power through the execution of five interrelated core missions. These missions are directed by three core values that constitute the foundational ethos of the service.
Significance: The importance of the United States Air Force is rooted in its distinct ability to manage and utilize the global benefits of air, space, and cyberspace, thereby projecting power to achieve national goals through strategic bombing, tactical assistance for ground forces, and a variety of contemporary capabilities such as reconnaissance, mobility, and cyber defense. Its capacity to “fly, fight, and win… airpower anytime, anywhere” facilitates global vigilance, reach, and power, rendering it vital for national defense and an indispensable asset for deterrence and collaborative operations with other military branches.
U.S. Army Air Force: The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) was in operation from June 20, 1941, until September 18, 1947. It functioned as the aerial combat division of the U.S. Army during and following World War II, evolving from the Army Air Corps and ultimately becoming the direct forerunner of the contemporary United States Air Force. The USAAF was formed to grant increased independence for air operations within the Army framework; however, it was ultimately dissolved when the independent Department of the Air Force was established on September 18, 1947.
