A Brief History:
Origination: The origins of waffles can be linked to ancient Greece, where culinary experts prepared flat cakes known as obelios by placing them between two metal plates over an open flame. These primitive waffles were typically savory and served as a vessel for meats and various toppings. The term “waffle” is derived from the Dutch word wafel, which denotes the honeycomb design characteristic of these cakes.

More Recent Origin: More dates that were an important start to waffles:
- Medieval Europe: During the 13th century, waffles emerged as a favored delicacy at religious celebrations. The Catholic Church produced flat wafers known as oublies, utilizing a mixture of grain flour and water, which were then thickened with leavening agents to form waffles. These waffles were frequently enhanced with honey and spices, adorned with Biblical imagery, crosses, and various religious motifs, serving as an accompaniment to the communion wafer. The patterns on the waffle irons would leave an imprint on the batter, resulting in a distinctive appearance for each waffle.
- The Dutch: During the 15th century, the Dutch introduced the use of rectangular plates featuring a grid design for the preparation of waffles, and they are recognized for introducing this delicacy to the United States. The Pilgrims had the opportunity to taste waffles in Holland while traveling to Massachusetts.
- More Recently: Numerous traditional recipes have diminished in popularity; however, several varieties from the 18th and 19th centuries remain prevalent across Northern Europe. Belgian waffles are commonly enjoyed as a breakfast item and may be garnished with whipped cream, powdered sugar, soft fruits, chocolate spread, syrup, butter, margarine, vanilla ice cream, or fresh fruits.

What Really are Waffles? A waffle is a culinary creation prepared from leavened batter or dough, which is cooked between two plates designed with patterns that impart a distinctive size, shape, and texture to the final product.
A Celebration: Recognized each day for many across the country, a very special meal, or even special dessert, snack, or even a very special midnight snack–waffles have grown accustomed to a great celebration for that home cooking aroma and very tasty treat that they really are!
Celebrated: Celebrated on August 24th every year!
