A Brief History on Root Beer:
Root Beer History: A root beer float started in North America and remains popular there. It is usually made from the sassafras plant, which gives it a unique taste, but there isn’t one standard recipe. Charles Elmer Hires, a pharmacist from Philadelphia, is known for creating Hires Root Beer. Legend has it that he first tried root beer during his honeymoon in 1875, a drink that has roots in colonial America.

However, different stories exist about when and where he discovered it. By 1876, Hires had his own recipe and began selling packets of powder for 25¢, each making one gallon of root beer. At the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia that year, he drew in customers by giving away free samples. Hires promoted his root beer as a mix of 16 wild roots and berries, claiming it could cleanse the blood and make you look healthier. In 1884, he started making a liquid extract and syrup for soda fountains, later shipping root beer in kegs and introducing a special dispenser called the “Hires Automatic Munimaker.” The Charles E. Hires Company was formed in 1890, and by 1891, they had sold over a million small bottles of Hires root beer. The brand changed hands several times from the late 1990’s to the 2000’s, and it was officially retired by Keurig Dr Pepper in the 2010’s.
