A Brief History on Ice Cream:
Origins: Roman emperor Nero to Alexander the Great, King Solomon, the ancient Chinese, European aristocrats, plus individuals in the Persian Empire would place snow in a bowl, drizzle concentrated grape juice over it, and enjoy it as a delicacy. Even during warm weather, they relished this sugary delightful refresher. They secretly stored snow in subterranean chambers called yakchal, where the cool temperatures prevented the snow from melting. Additionally, the Persians trekked to the mountain summits near their summer capital to collect fresh snowfall.

Chinese Origins: During the Tang Dynasty, approximately in 697 AD, the Chinese began the practice of freezing dairy products using salt and ice. Nevertheless, the outcome was not quite the same as the ice cream we savor today. Following the development of frozen desserts and drinks, culinary historians identify Naples, Italy, as the origin of the first ice cream. The credit for this innovation is attributed to Antonio Latini, who was born in 1642 and is known for creating a milk-based sorbet.

U.S. Origins: In the United States, the Quaker colonists are credited with introducing their ice recipes. They established the first ice cream shops, including those in New York and various other cities during the colonial period. A few Founding Fathers including Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were in on this refresher!

Why, When & Where: Cold and sweet equals a very quenching and delicious combo on a hot day all around the world have been being refreshed thousands of years in many different cultures.

  1. Such fun facts! I was always under the idea that vanilla was the most popular ice cream flavor – it’s close between the two (chocolate and vanilla) so I could see it changing depending on when it’s asked. I love all the fun new flavors that are always coming out – something for everyone!
