The History:
Origination: Evidence of humans adorning their bodies with permanent designs has been present for thousands of years. Egyptian and ice mummies showcase various types of religious and status symbols. The term “tattoo” originates from the Polynesian word tatau, which translates to “to tap or to mark.” Across the globe, the cultures associated with tattooing differ, with some remaining relatively unchanged throughout history. In the United States, sailors introduced tattooing to the coastal regions as a result of their adventures on islands.

The Art Behind the Tatoo: Tattoos are considered a form of art because they involve artistic skill, creativity, and technical expertise to create permanent images on the body. Tattoo artists use imagination and techniques like shading, color theory, and line work to craft appealing designs, much like traditional artists. Tattoos serve as a visual language, allowing individuals to express their identity, beliefs, and experiences through imagery. They hold personal meaning for the wearer and can commemorate important life events. The practice of tattooing has evolved from marginalized to mainstream art, gaining recognition in museums and galleries. Although some believe the permanence of tattoos distinguishes them from other art forms, many appreciate this as a characteristic that enhances their meaning and impact.

Black Gone Green: Black tattoos can turn green over time due to several reasons, including ink fading, the body’s immune reaction, and the ink’s composition. Black ink is made of different pigments, some of which can fade faster, leaving a greenish tint. The fading occurs as the immune system tries to break down and remove the ink. Sun exposure can speed up this process by breaking down pigments more quickly. Additionally, older inks often had more green or blue pigments in them. The type of skin and where the tattoo is placed can also influence fading, as can the quality of the ink used by the tattoo artist. Thus, a black tattoo changing to green is a natural process.
