Origination: Macaroni and cheese has a rich history, with early recipes dating back to the 13th century in Italy. However, it was James Hemings, the enslaved chef of Thomas Jefferson, who is credited with bringing the dish to the United States after learning to make it in France. Jefferson developed a taste for it while in France and Hemings played a key role in popularizing this dish in America.

Some U.S. Origination & Kraft: Hemings’ knowledge contributed to the widespread acceptance of the dish, which ultimately became a fundamental part of American cuisine, especially following its inclusion in cookbooks such as Mary Randolph’s “The Virginia House-Wife” published in 1824. Kraft’s Role: In 1937, Kraft Foods launched boxed macaroni and cheese, reinforcing its status in American households, particularly during the Great Depression and World War II.
