A Brief History:
Origination: National Watch Day was implemented as a day to honor the invention of the watch. What a great and useful way to be able to keep track of time! The wristwatch history began in the 18th century, with key developments in the 19th and 20th centuries. Initially popular among women, wristwatches gained popularity among men after the military used them in World War I. In 1810, Abraham-Louis Breguet made the first wristwatch for the Queen of Naples. In 1868, Patek Philippe designed a bracelet watch for a countess. The Garstin Company patented a “Watch Wristlet” in the 1880s, as women favored wristlets while men preferred pocket watches.

Are Watches a Jewelry Item? Watches inherently provide an element of decoration to what might otherwise be a plain outfit for men. In these instances, I regard them as jewelry. Nevertheless, the majority of men wear watches primarily for their practical functions, which leads to a merging of the distinction between a jewelry and fashion item, a women’s accessory, and even a tool.
The Military Use of the Watch: In the early 20th century, men began wearing wristwatches, starting in the military for coordination. In 1904, Louis Cartier created a wristwatch for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. World War I increased their use, and by 1917, the UK War Office issued them to soldiers, enhancing their popularity. Watches for military use were made available with 24-hour “military” timing, including a watch that went around only one time per day, as opposed to twice for the a.m. and the p,m, Noon appeared the 6 o’clock, and it took time to get used to 6 a.m. appearing at the 3 o’clock and 6 p.m. appearing at the 9 o’clock.

Modern Wristwatches:
- By the mid-20th century, wristwatches gained widespread acceptance among both men and women, serving as practical timekeeping devices as well as fashionable accessories.
