It goes back to biblical times, and more recently had a lot to do with wartime vibes.

Among the well-known rituals was the practice of gathering flowers and presenting them to acquaintances and unfamiliar individuals in cone-shaped baskets. These baskets, known as May Day Baskets, have become a widespread tradition. Nowadays, the custom involves hanging a cone-shaped basket filled with flowers or presents on the exterior doorknob, followed by a quick knock or ring of the doorbell before swiftly departing.
