The History:
Origination of Ravioli: Ravioli has a long history, being a popular Italian pasta dish, dates back to the 14th century, with early mentions in Venetian and Ligurian texts. The name “ravioli” means “to wrap” in Italian. The first written references to ravioli come from the 14th century, including mentions by Francesco di Marco Datini and recipes in the mid-14th-century “Libro per cuoco. ” Similar dishes called “rauioles” appeared in England during the same time. Historians suggest ravioli may have been inspired by Chinese dumplings brought to Italy by Marco Polo or created from leftover ingredients. By the 16th century, ravioli became popular in Roman cuisine, with regional variations in fillings. Tomato sauce was introduced later, as ravioli was initially served “al brodo,” or in broth.

Ravioli: Ravioli is a classic Italian pasta that is filled with a variety of ingredients. This dish consists of two layers of thin egg pasta dough enveloping a filling, reminiscent of a small meatball nestled comfortably between the layers of flavorful dough. Common fillings include cheese, meat, vegetables, and various seasonings. Typically, ravioli is served in a broth or accompanied by a pasta sauce. Although ravioli is often enjoyed as a main course, it can also be served as a side dish or appetizer. Many popular preparations involve baking or deep-frying the ravioli. Additionally, it can be transformed into a dessert by incorporating chocolate into the pasta or using cream cheese as a filling, topped with caramel sauce. Ravioli can be made from scratch or bought fresh or frozen at grocery stores. In the United States, Chef Boyardee played a significant role in popularizing canned ravioli, which is typically filled with beef or processed cheese and served in a tomato, tomato-meat, or tomato-cheese sauce.

Toasted Ravioli: Toasted Ravioli originated in St. Louis, Missouri. In the 1940s, at a restaurant called Oldani’s, a chef inadvertently dropped a ravioli into the fryer, resulting in a delightful culinary surprise. This crispy ravioli soon found its way onto the menu, or so the tale suggests. If that is indeed the case, we consider it a truly appetizing story. Toasted ravioli comes in many flavors, including cheese and meat filled.
Celebrated: National Ravioli Day is celebrated every year on March 20th.
