A Brief History:
Origination:  The Saratoga Chip was actually the original potato chip. On August 24, 1853, a dissatisfied diner repeatedly returned his thick and soggy potatoes to the kitchen. In response, Chef George Crum thinly sliced the potatoes, fried them to a crisp, and generously seasoned them with salt. Much to his amazement, the customer adored the new creation. These crispy delights quickly earned a permanent spot on the restaurant’s menu as “Saratoga Chips.”

Continued Innovation:  Different explanations suggest the origin of the potato chip can be traced back to recipes found in Shilling Cookery for the People by Alexis Soyer (1845) or Mary Randolph’s The Virginia House-Wife (1824). While both books mention slicing and frying potatoes in grease, it is still unclear whether the potatoes were fried until crispy. However, by the late 1870s, the term “Saratoga Chips” began appearing on menus in train cars, hotel restaurants, and street carts across the country. Bakeries started making the chips in larger quantities, which were then transported to restaurants and grocers in barrels. Grocers sold them to families by the pound, with instructions to bake them in a hot oven for a few minutes to achieve the same crispiness as if they were fried that same day.

The Classic Potato Chip : The Mike-sell’s Potato Chip Company, headquartered in Dayton, Ohio and established in 1910, proudly declares itself as the “oldest potato chip company in the United States.” On the other hand, Tri-Sum Potato Chips, based in New England and originally known as the Leominster Potato Chip Company since 1908, asserts its claim as America’s first potato chip manufacturer, located in Leominster, Massachusetts. During the 20th century, potato chips transcended their origins as a delicacy only found in restaurants and became widely produced for households. The introduction of flavored chips took place in the 1950s, adding a delightful twist to the classic snack. It’s remarkable to note that potato chip revenues exceed $15 billion annually worldwide!

A Modern Celebration: The United States’ potato chip consumption from 2011 to 2020, along with a forecast until 2024, is depicted in this statistical analysis. The data utilized in this study has been derived from the U.S. Census data and the Simmons National Consumer Survey (NHCS), both of which were analyzed by Statista. In 2020, it was found that approximately 284.37 million Americans consumed potato chips. Projections indicate that this number is expected to rise to 292.95 million by 2024.
