Which State is OR:
The Beginning Years: Oregon’s ancient history shows human presence for over 5,000 years, with early activity noted at places like Paisley Caves and Fort Rock Cave. The state’s landscape, influenced by volcanic activity and floods, supported various Native American groups who adapted to their environment. Paleo-Indians, believed to have migrated from Asia, arrived in Oregon. Evidence from Paisley Caves indicates human habitation dating back to that time, while sage bark sandals found near Fort Rock Cave suggest human presence. From ancient times to 200 years ago, the Archaic period was marked by localized economies based on a variety of plants and animals. By the 16th century, Oregon was home to many tribes with diverse languages and cultural practices. European settlers traded furs with Indigenous people, but diseases brought by settlers caused significant population declines. Oregon’s geology was shaped by volcanic eruptions and floods, creating ancient waterways and various rock formations.
