Which State is CA:

The Beginning Years: It is believed that California’s ancient history features Native American tribes, Spanish colonization, and Mexican rule. Over 100 tribes, like the Karok and Mojave, lived in California over 5,000 years ago. Spanish colonization started in 1769, and the name California comes from a mythical island. The Mexican Republic took over in 1823.

More History: The state of California had Colonial citizens had permits for parts of the land near 1823. The California Gold Rush of 1848–1855 brought many people to California. The influx of gold boosted the American economy. California became a state in 1850. Underwater cultural sites, Native American archaeological sites, shipwrecks, and cargo spills have been found in California’s underwater environment.

Climate of California: California has a climate is known for hot deserts to alpine tundra based on elevation, latitude, and how close it is to the ocean. It is mainly Mediterranean, featuring warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Coastal areas see average highs of about 70°F, rising above 80°F in summer. Inland regions have hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Higher altitudes enjoy beautiful summers, colorful falls, and cold, snowy winters. California has approximately 280 sunny days per year, with an upward shift as going south–with way over 300 days per year the further south, and an average of 77% of days being sunny.

  • 1542: Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo is the first European to visit the coast of California.
  • 1579: Sir Francis Drake lands on the coast of California and claims it for Great Britain.
  • 1769: The Spanish begin to build missions. They build 21 total missions along the coast.
  • 1781: The city of Los Angeles is established.
  • 1821: California becomes part of the country of Mexico.
  • 1840’s: Settlers begin to arrive from the east on the Oregon Trail and the California Trail.
  • 1846: California declares its independence from Mexico.
  • 1848: The United States gains control of California after the Mexican-American war.
  • 1848: Gold is discovered at Sutter’s Mill. The Gold Rush begins.
  • 1850: California is admitted to the Union as the 31st state.
  • 1854: Sacramento becomes the state capital. It is named the permanent capital in 1879.
  • 1869: The First Transcontinental Railroad is completed connecting San Francisco with the east coast.
  • 1890: Yosemite National Park is established.
  • 1906: A huge earthquake destroys much of San Francisco.
  • 1937: The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is opened for traffic.
  • 1955: Disneyland opens in Anaheim.
  • 1989: Loma Prieta earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 on October 17th at 5:04 pm
