A Brief History:
Origination: The earliest commercially produced mint patty or cake was created by the Quiggin family on the Isle of Man, situated in the center of the northern Irish Sea. They had been crafting these cakes since 1840; however, in 1880, four of the sons established the Kendal Mint Cake Company.

More Recent Evolution: In the United States, peppermint patties were produced by various regional confectioneries as early as 1900. Notable companies included Idaho Candy Company, Trudeau Candie’s, and Pearson’s. In 1951, Pearson’s acquired Trudeau, with both companies originating from Minnesota. Among these, York Peppermint Patties, manufactured by the York Cone Company in Pennsylvania, are perhaps the most recognized, although they are not the oldest.

More Recently: York Peppermint Patties were introduced in 1940 and initially distributed on a regional basis, similar to many confectionery producers of that time. The brand gained a competitive edge in the market due to the firmness and crispness of its product, in contrast to the softer offerings from other manufacturers. A former employee of York recalled that the final quality assessment of the patties before they were shipped from the factory was referred to as the “snap test.” If the candy did not break cleanly in the center during this test, it was not allowed to be sold in stores.

A Celebration: National Peppermint Patty Day is a day that celebrates both chocolate and peppermint. National Peppermint Patty Day celebrates a confection that is cherished by countless individuals globally. The day was named in order to celebrate the chocolate and the mint lover all in one and all day long.

Celebrated: February 11th every year!
