The Beginning Years: Arkansas’ ancient history involves the arrival of the first indigenous people, cultural growth, and the presence of European explorers. Paleo-Indians were the first inhabitants over 5,000 years ago, hunting mammoths and fishing. The Archaic Period saw plant domestication. European explorers like Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto was the first European to visit Arkansas in 1514, while Henri de Tonty established Arkansas Post in 1686.

More History: The state of Arkansas’ history includes being a French territory, the Louisiana Purchase, and its involvement in the American Civil War. It became the 25th state in 1836. The U. S. bought Arkansas from France in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. The Arkansas Territory was formed in 1819, and statehood was achieved on June 15, 1836. In 1861, Arkansas seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy. It was a key battleground, with important battles like Pea Ridge. Arkansas was readmitted to the Union in 1868. Notable events include the discovery of diamonds in 1906, oil in 1921, the first Walmart opening in 1962, and Bill Clinton becoming governor in 1978.

Climate of Arkansas: Arkansas has a climate is known for its humid subtropical climate with four seasons and mild temperatures. The average high is 73°F, and the average low is 53°F. Temperatures are cooler in the mountains and valleys, with extremes in late summer and winter. The state gets a lot of precipitation each month, which decreases from south to north and is higher in certain mountain areas. Spring and fall are mild, while late summer is hot and humid. Winter can be very cold. Arkansas’s central location allows various weather systems to affect its climate, leading to changes in clouds, temperatures, and precipitation. Arkansas has about 220 days being sunny, with approximately 60% of days being sunny.

More About Arkansas: Throughout the years, Arkansas has earned the titles of “The Natural State” for its beautiful lakes, rivers, and hot springs, with over 600,000 acres of lakes and nearly 10,000 miles of rivers. The Ozark and Ouachita Mountains provide hiking trails and waterfalls. The state experiences frequent storms, including tornadoes and hail. Arkansas produces significant amounts of bauxite for aluminum and bromine, along with petroleum, natural gas, and coal. It is also known for its rice and poultry farming. Additionally, Arkansas has a rich folk music tradition and is home to notable authors and musicians like John Grisham, Maya Angelou, and Johnny Cash.

The Great Location of Arkansas: The state of Arkansas is 240 miles long and 270 miles wide. It is bordered by Missouri to the north, Tennessee and Mississippi to the east, Louisiana to the south, Texas to the southwest, and Oklahoma to the west.
