Which State is MO:
The Beginning Years: It is believed that the ancient Missouri history features Indigenous peoples who lived in the area over 5,000 years ago. This includes the Mississippian culture, known for large cities and earthwork mounds, which declined by 1400 B.C.. The Oneota people, living in longhouses near the Mississippi River, were ancestors of several groups. The Osage, Missouri, and Illini tribes farmed and hunted while living in earthen lodges. European settlers, mainly French Canadians, arrived, with St. Louis founded in 1764.

More History: The state of Missouri became a U.S. state in 1821. The French set up small settlements, founding Ste. Genevieve in 1735 and St. Louis in 1764. In 1803, the U. S. bought Missouri from France during the Louisiana Purchase. Missouri is referred to by this nickname because it served as a vital starting point for those settling and exploring the western territories in the 19th century. Missouri became a slave state in 1820 through the Missouri Compromise, which also made Maine a free state. During the Civil War, Missouri, a border state, stayed in the Union while many wanted secession, and it later abolished slavery. In the mid-1800’s, it was called the “Gateway to the West” for settlers. Post-Civil War, Kansas City and St. Louis grew as industrial centers. Annie White Baxter became Missouri’s first woman in elected office and the first female county clerk in the U. S. The Wainwright Building in St. Louis was one of the first skyscrapers, and station KSD started broadcasting in 1947.
