A Brief History:
Origination: The practice of Christmas caroling has origins in pagan festivities associated with the Winter Solstice and medieval European traditions. During medieval times, groups of singers would travel from door to door to share holiday joy. Later, the Christian faith embraced carols to commemorate the nativity. The term carol refers to a song or dance that expresses joy.

More History: In the 4th and 5th centuries, this tradition was embraced by the Christian faith to commemorate the birth of Christ, with the songs originally performed in Latin. St. Francis of Assisi played a significant role in enhancing the appeal of caroling by combining the melodies with narratives (canticles), allowing the songs to be sung in contemporary languages. The Victorian period witnessed a notable increase in caroling activities, leading to the creation of many beloved carol songs that continue to be performed today.

Popular Songs Typically Caroled: While caroling may not enjoy the same level of popularity as it did in the past, it remains a cherished tradition that many families, communities, and churches eagerly anticipate each year. Among the well-known caroling songs are:

  • Here Comes Santa Claus
  • Jingle Bells
  • Joy to the World
  • Let it, Snow!
  • O Christmas Tree
  • O Come, All Ye Faithful
  • Silent Night
  • We Wish You A Merry Christmas

Making Immediate Friends: National Go Caroling Day is a delightful occasion that promotes happiness and goodwill. If you are new to caroling, choose 3 to 4 simple songs and gather friends who embrace the festive spirit. While not everyone may have a perfect singing voice, this will be inconsequential when you are accompanied by loved ones who share your excitement. Visit friends and neighbors, singing with genuine joy. Afterward, return home to enjoy hot chocolate and cookies. Caroling serves as a wonderful means of giving back to the community.
