Because of the beauty from the eye in the sky. . .I am featuring a .GIF & video of the whole loop of (at its worst magnitude near landfall near Perry, Florida) Atlantic Category 4 Hurricane Helene, which started out 1° east of Tasbapauni, Nicaragua at 13°N & 83°W, affecting the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Yucatan Peninsula, and causing significant damage to the southeastern United States’ states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky, then moving to cause moderate damage or otherwise affecting and also the states of Alabama, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. The storm damage assessment indicates that the total direct and indirect damages are estimated at $48.8 billion, in addition to projected mitigation costs of $4.8 billion. According to the budget office, the federal government is expected to contribute $13.6 billion, while private and other funding sources are anticipated to provide $6.3 billion, andt a significant portion of the losses is unlikely to be recouped. The storm caused several communications breakdowns, and Starlink Internet services were dispatched to residents and businesses in all areas courtesy of Elon Musk. The storm moved fastly up the Gulf into Florida, and slowed to stalled over the lower Ohio valley, whereby the major damage in the western North Carolina was invoked, because the storm stalled for such a long period of time. The storm fizzled at 37°N & 88°W near the Kentucky/Illinois border, as featured all on one loop on .GIPHY.

Official damage report: $87.9 billion (to present), 233 deaths. Helene is the most costly storm of the season, just over Hurricane Milton which was $85 billion (more info to follow in future post). The costliest hurricane to hit the United States, causing $172.5 billion in damage was Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
