Interview:

• Can you give a background on how the battle of living in a family of superstars is for the main character, being a recovering addict?

For Cillian, he’s never coveted fame. He always wanted to run the family business, which is McGloughlin Construction. As a teenager, his dad had a terrible accident and became addicted to pain meds, which began his descent into alcoholism and a gambling addiction which took years for him to kick. Meanwhile, the oldest McGloughlin (Connor – the bass player in Less Than Zero, who we meet in Fearless/Fearless Encore, books 3/7 in my Less Than Zero series) was forced to give up his dreams for a long time in order to take over the business he resented – and make sure his brothers got through school.

Cillian always wanted to prove himself, but Connor insisted he get his college degree, setting him up for ultimate success. Once he got through, Connor allowed him to take over and he was able to pursue his own dreams.

Cillian, we learn, has succumbed to some of his father’s addictive tendencies, using alcohol as a way to cope with stress and then really losing his way when he learns Ivy’s secret.

• Can you tell me about the graceful action of taking over the family business despite the struggle of recovery?

Well, the grace is that the entire family were very resentful of their dad, Rory, for how checked out he was and how he nearly ruined the family. Cillian always had kinship with his dad, so it makes sense that part of that kinship was sharing the common trait of using substances to deal with stress. When Cillian goes through rehab, Rory is able to step in and redeem himself – and be there for his son.

• Can you elaborate on how the meeting of Ivy transforms into an energy, despite the chemistry while secrets threaten their hearts?

I love the idea of kindred spirits. Both Ivy and Cillian, though 14 years apart, shared similar energy. The initial attraction, and Ivy’s desire to break free of her family’s tragic legacy, led her to rebel. To act out and do something uncharacteristic. In doing so, she ends up in a spiral – lies that would have been harmless fester as she and Cillian fall deeply in love and she’s still so young and inexperienced, she’s unsure how to navigate. Also, her lies enable Cillian to get to know the “real” Ivy unbound by her age and family history – so it’s a double edge sword.

• Can you describe the rekindled passion that faces the buried secrets with a future that shapes up to be not only bright, but forever?

When Cillian breaks it off with Ivy, he thinks he’s doing the right thing. He also knows that he’ll never have the same kind of connection with any other woman because he’s older and has more experience. In many ways, though crass, he loved Ivy so much he wanted her to be free from him so she could be a young, free woman who could get to know herself. When she returns and they reconnect, that same energy is there. They are both hurt – Cillian by her lies and Ivy by Cillian’s rejection, but once they’re able to talk as adults, they realize they are meant to be. Of course, Ivy’s original deception runs deep, and her father doesn’t realize the man who broke his daughter’s heart is Cillian, and Ivy’s father is Cillian’s biggest client. They have a lot to navigate.
