The History:
Barbecues: National Barbecue Day is an occasion to commemorate, regardless of whether you opt to grill in the comfort of your own home or indulge in some delectable takeout. Throughout the nation, you will witness Americans relishing a diverse array of tantalizing barbecue flavors and sauces. Within the realm of barbecue, individuals who wield the grill have the autonomy to determine their preferred cooking method. Whether they opt for charcoal, wood charcoal, wood, gas, or slow cooking, they proudly regard themselves as connoisseurs of the culinary art of barbecuing.

Origination: Some historians believe that barbeque originated with early Caribbean tribes. The first recorded instance of barbeque can be traced back to Hispaniola, where Christopher Columbus witnessed indigenous tribes cooking meat over an open flame. Spanish explorers later named this cooking process barbacoa, or barbeque, after encountering the tribes. In 1540, explorer Hernando De Soto documented the Chickasaw tribe cooking pork over a barbacoa. It is unclear whether the Chickasaw taught settlers this method or if settlers adopted it themselves. Regardless, settlers eventually began grilling meat over open flames, establishing barbeque as the traditional practice we know today.

U.S. Origination: North Carolina is considered the birthplace of American barbeque, with references to it dating back to the 1700s. While barbeque has evolved and changed throughout the country, North Carolina barbecue has remained true to its roots. Pork was the original meat of choice due to its abundance and affordability. After cooking, the meat would be preserved by hanging it in a smokehouse for future use.

Barbecue Is an Art For Many: Everyone has their own unique homemade barbecue recipe. However, many recipes share common ingredients. barbecue sauce often includes ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire, brown sugar, soy sauce, and molasses. The best dry rub recipes often consist of a combination of onion, smoked paprika, ground cumin, crushed red pepper, and turmeric. You can perfect your own sauce or rub by experimenting with these ingredients. When it comes to serving a delicious barbecue meal, the sides you choose are just as important. Potatoes and baked beans with bacon are considered classic barbecue staples. A good coleslaw pairs well with shredded barbecue pork and makes the perfect sandwich. Alternatively, a creamy macaroni and cheese dish complements both dry and wet barbecue. Corn on the cob is another popular side, often grilled with the husk on and then removed before eating. And of course, no barbecue meal would be complete without a slice of refreshing watermelon for a light and satisfying dessert after a hearty meal.

Celebrated: National Barbecue is celebrated on May 16th each year!

A Few Facts:
I am sharing a few facts, and more, some trivia, some not trivial. . .

Barbecue, Barbecue. . .and More Barbecue:
Plenty of Barbecue Styles: In the realm of the barbecue, Americans have historically recognized four distinct regions:

  1. Kansas City: This region is renowned for its slow-cooked beef and pork cuts, which are meticulously prepared with a sauce that combines the richness of tomato and the sweetness of molasses.
  2. Carolina: In this region, the focus lies on slow-roasted pork, which is skillfully cooked with a sauce that harmoniously blends the tanginess of vinegar with the savory notes of ketchup.
  3. Memphis: Here, the art of barbecue revolves around dry-rubbed pork, which is cooked at a low temperature for an extended period of time. This allows the meat to absorb the delectable smokiness and flavors inherent to barbecue.
  4. Texas: In the Lone Star State, beef takes center stage. It is lovingly slow-cooked in smoker grills, resulting in tender and succulent meat. To enhance its taste, a smoky and flavorsome dry rub is generously applied.

Plenty of Reasons to Barbecue: Here are just a few different occasions to barbecue:

  • Picnics
  • Backyard get-togethers
  • Socializing
