How did I name this book?

I’ve never been great at naming stories. Originally, I was going to call this novel Single, Solo, Loser, Mermaid. That was a phrase from the first chapter that I wrote. It’s accurate. The story is about a girl who is single and feels like a loser because she has yet to lure a man for sex, a benchmark for mermaid success. I liked it because it was pithy and playful, with lots of alliteration with the S’s and L’s, but it was perhaps a bit too whimsical for how dark the story ended up. 

So I went back to the drawing board. 

I knew I wanted the word mermaid right in the title. That’s practical, because it’s all about a woman’s underwater experience, so if you’re not into mermaids this probably isn’t the story for you. Then I started to think about the juxtapositions in the story… the mermaids themselves are highly desirable, but the world they live in is a cold, cruel place. Putting the terms all together to create Cruel and Splendid Mermaids just seemed like a great fit!

Synopsis:

For mermaids and humans, the rules are the same: be careful around strangers, be wary of magic and before you dive in, check what’s lurking under the waves.

Nineteen-year-old Ellara Merme’s whole life she’s known one purpose: to mate with men, to procreate, and to bear offspring to fight in Neptune’s underwater army. No problem… There’s just one hiccup. Her siren song doesn’t work.

She’s a broken mermaid with a faulty lure and she has only one week left to make the damaged song work. But all that can change with the ocean’s next deadly storm. Dragged from a shipwreck, mythology says a rescued sailor will be so grateful he’ll fall into anyone’s arms. Even a broken mermaid’s. Still, there’s a reason why merfolk and humans don’t get along. And a lot can go wrong when a girl from the ocean washes up on the shore.

Think mating is easy? Think again.
