A Brief History:
Origination: National Chocolate Cake Day celebrates both chocolate and the cake that goes with it. People celebrate special occasions like anniversaries, birthdays and weddings with cake, and chocolate cake is people’s most special favorite choice when it comes to selection of cake. Historians in the field of food have attributed that cake goes back to ancient Egyptian culture, showing evidence of advanced baking skill. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, The word “cake” is traced back the 13th century English. Chocolate’s origination started Chocolate’s at least 4,000 years ago in ancient Mesoamerica, which is the present day Mexico where the first cacao plants were found. It was the Olmec, an early civilization in Latin America, that turned the cacao plant into chocolate for the first time.

United States Evolution: Chocolate’s American origin started out with it being consumed primarily as a beverage until the 1830’s-1840’s. Because of it’s consistency being mostly liquid, cakes with chocolate in or on them, mostly did not exist then. The chocolate cake was born in 1765 when a doctor and a chocolate maker teamed up in an old mill, where they ground up cocoa beans between huge millstones in order to make up a thick syrup. They poured the syrup into a mold shaped like a cake, which originally were meant to be transformed into a beverage. Eliza Lesliem, who was a popular Philadelphia cookbook author, published her earliest chocolate cake recipe using chopped chocolate in the 1847 publication of “The Lady’s Receipt Book”. There were other cookbooks in similar times with recipes such as Sarah Tyson Rorer and Maria Parloa, all making like development of the chocolate cake.

Mid to Later 20th Century: The first boxed cake mix was marketed by O. Duff and Sons starting in the late 1920s. Betty Crocker followed up with a dry cake mix in 1947. Chocolate gained popularity by its great flavor. German Chocolate Cake was an American Midwest creation with the sweet ingredients of sweet baking chocolate, coconut, and pecans.

More Recently: Today, chocolate cake is still the very delicious dessert that it has always attained from back in the old days every year. More and more renditions and recipes have arisen in more recent years. The microwave had given more opportunities and different styles, especially after inventing the cup-shaped round and square microwavable light grey surfaces that refract the microwave to ensure more even cooking.

Celebrated: January 27th every year!
