Today’s Featured Flower Photo of the Day: Dandelions

Here is today’s featured photo flower presentation. To let this year shine bright, I am featuring fine photos of flowers, continuing to honor the brighter side of life again this year. Today’s Flower of the day is the Dandelions.

The Dandelion, or the Taraxacum officinale is a large genus of flowering plants in the Asteraceae (Cichorioideae) family, is a flower, although most people consider it a weed, because it has the ability to grow right in the middle of most types of green grass. The Dandelion grows to the size of 2 to 6 inches tall and 2 to 6 inches wide, with a 1 to 2 inches diameter size yellow flowers. The yellow flower turns to seed that can blow into the wind very easily as it goes into the erythrospermum stage. The Dandelion starts germination usually in full sun, anywhere where the soil is from neutral pH to acidic pH. The Dandelion grows all the way through the growing season, spring to fall–but the main germination period is about the same time as the main or first planting period of the season in spring. Lawn care companies spread a broadleaf herbicide which will only kill broadleaf weeds like Dandelions and Clover, but not the grass. The Dandelion was an introduced plant to North America circa the mid-1600s, when European settlers brought it to eastern America, cultivating the plant into their gardens for food and medicine. The plant has since spread clear across the whole North American continent, and grows in a vast array of climates, inclined to grow best in the sunnier areas of soil.

  1. This is a pretty photo and flower. Most people just think that they are weeds but they have some medicinal properties and I think that you can make some kind of wine with them to.
