Today is National Corn Chips Day for 2026! Corn chips are so delicious, with and without salt and optional salsa! Flip on a movie or television! Not a tortilla, but a corn chip. . .Just about everything is better with corn chips. . .

A Brief History:
Dual U.S. Originations:  Isador J. Filler was a salesman: In 1932, while eating a tostada on a trip to San Antonio, Texas–Filler had an idea of making the tostada into rectangles and marketing it as a chip, and so he patented his concept. His focus remained with his patent for the Corn Dough Processing Machine. Elmer Doolin was an entrepreneur: Around the exact same time, also traveling in San Antonio and was enjoying some Fritos. The story states that he paid $100 for the recipe. Tinkering around with it and experimenting in his home, he created his version of a corn chip, a recipe of which he started to sell out of the back of his Model T Ford. He began to mass-produce under the name Frito Corn Chips. By 1945, Doolin teamed up with Herman Lay as a distributor of Fritos across the country. After Doolin’s death in the year 1959, the two companies merged into the Frito-Lay Corporation, the name to this day that spells delicious!

The Corn Chip NOT a Tortilla Chip:  Corn chips are not to be confused with a tortilla chip. Both are made from cornmeal which is baked or fried in oil, but the consistency and texture are quite different. There are different steps for the process of the corn which separate a tortilla from a corn chip: the tortilla chip has the corn soaked in lime-water which breaks down the corn hulls, thereby creating a crisper and milder chip. The corn chip has a sturdier consistency with a robust corn flavor.

Corn Chips Go Well With : Whether with queso or salsa it is easy to celebrate National Corn Chip Day.

A celebration: Recognized each year across the country, a whole day that encourages corn chip lovers to whip up a buffet of favorite toppings and dips.
