A Brief History:
Origination: The origin of Festivus lies within the Jerry Seinfeld Show. In Seinfeld Season 9 Episode 10, titled “The Strike,” Elaine inadvertently distributes a fictitious phone number on the reverse side of a complimentary sandwich coupon, while George’s father reintroduces a holiday he created as an alternative to Christmas.

Meaning of Festivus: Just like the whole premise of the Seinfeld, the meaning of Festivus means “absolutely nothing.” Just like the funny show though, it is nice to have another holiday to celebrate!

Festivus Customs & Slogan: The show introduced the concept of Festivus to a broader audience, featuring Frank Costanza, portrayed by Jerry Stiller, who claims to have created the holiday as a counter to the commercialization of Christmas. The holiday is famously associated with the slogan, “A Festivus for the rest of us.” Sitcoms frequently intertwine themes of holidays with familial conflicts. Yet, a glance at our own families reveals a source of humor. This holiday serves as a reminder of how readily we can become overly serious. Issues such as politics, traditions, and longstanding grievances can lead us down unexpected avenues. Occasionally, these avenues result in amusing situations. Ideally, they are more amusing than otherwise. Observing these dynamics through the lens of a Seinfeld episode, while comfortably at home, allows us to recognize aspects of ourselves and our loved ones.

Celebrated: Festivus is celebrated annually since 2007 on December 23rd, in honor of the fictional holiday featured in the television comedy series, Seinfeld.

A Few Facts:
I am sharing a few facts, and more, some trivia, some not trivial. . .

Trivia: Festivus traditions, have evolved over the years through the influence of Seinfeld.

  • Display an aluminum Festivus pole prominently in your home. However, in the O’Keefe household, a clock was utilized instead, placed in a bag and affixed to the wall.
  • Host a traditional dinner in the evening.
  • During the meal, engage in the Airing of Grievances, where each individual takes a turn expressing how they have been let down by others over the past year.

  • Following dinner, the Feats of Strength commence, which involves wrestling with the head of the household. It is important to note that the holiday is deemed incomplete unless the head of the household is pinned; failure to achieve this may lead to an ongoing celebration of Festivus.
  • A Festivus Miracle is often a modest occurrence. For instance, successfully bringing all the groceries into the house for dinner without mishaps can be considered a Festivus Miracle.

What a Seinfeld episode it was!
