Later With the Name: It is believed that brownies originated in the United States, with their name being derived from their brown color and the mythical pixie-like creatures often found in children’s stories during that era. According to one account, brownies were supposedly created at the Palmer House in Chicago in 1892.

Chocolate Brownies: Chocolate brownies didn’t become widely popular until the 1920s, when chocolate became more readily available. Early recipes called for butter, eggs, sugar, flour, melted chocolate, and nuts in varying quantities, which means that making homemade chocolate brownies hasn’t changed much in the last hundred years!

When: December 8th every year.

A Few Facts:
I am sharing a few facts, and more, some trivia, some not trivial. . .

More Brownie Facts and Yummy Tales:
Facts about Brownies:

  • The addition of the suffix “ie” to the end of a word is often said to give it a more endearing or cute quality. This is why the name “brownie” was chosen for these delightful treats, as they are brown in color and undeniably adorable. By the way, do you know what’s even cuter than a regular brownie? A mini-brownie, of course!
  • Blondies, on the other hand, are a variation of brownies that do not contain chocolate.
  • The exact origin of brownies is still unknown, but some theories suggest that they were created by a chef who made a mistake. It is said that he accidentally added chocolate to a cake mix, resulting in the creation of brownies.
  • Fortunately, it turned out to be a happy accident!
  • The first officially documented brownies were made in Chicago for a ladies’ fair luncheon in the late 1800s. The chefs for the event were tasked with inventing a new dessert that could be included in the boxed lunches. These brownies were adorned with an apricot glaze and a layer of walnuts.
  • The largest brownie ever made weighed a whopping 3000 pounds and was served at the Hudson Valley Chocolate Festival in 2001. It consisted of 850 pounds of sugar, 750 pounds of chocolate chips, 500 pounds of butter, 500 pounds of flour, and 3,500 eggs. If you ever decide to make it, you might want to scale down the recipe a bit!
  • Although it doesn’t quite match the weight of the Hudson Valley brownie, the Guinness World Records recognizes the largest brownie as weighing 335.1 pounds. It was made using 210 packs of Betty Crocker brownie mix and all the necessary ingredients.
