Today’s Featured Flower Photo of the Day:
The Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus

Here is today’s featured photo flower presentation. To let 2025 shine bright, I am featuring fine photos of flowers, continuing to honor the brighter side of life again this year. Today’s Flower of the day is my favorite flower of this year, my own Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus.

The Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus, or the Opuntia Humifusa, are a unique cactus that has flowers that are predominantly yellow, featuring a reddish-orange hue at the center, and can grow to approximately 3 inches in diameter. These striking flowers typically flourish between June and July. The Eastern Prickly Pear is a shrub-like cactus characterized by flat, fleshy pads (cladodes) that function as leaves and retain water, allowing it to thrive in diverse climates, including cooler temperatures due to unique antifreeze compounds. This species is indigenous to a broad area of the United States, extending from New Mexico to Montana and eastward to Florida and Massachusetts. This cactus grows nicely in Illinois, and gives me a better look at dreading those hot June days!

  • Spacing : 1 to 3′ (30 – 92 cm)
  • Height :1 to 2′ (30 – 61 cm)
  • Width : 6 to 12″ (15 – 31 cm)
  • Exposure : Full Sun, needing six hours of direct sunlight daily, for best flowering and overall health. They tolerate shady days, but years that are shadier yield less flowering and growth.
